After a crucial game against Aston Villa (1-0) in dreadful wintry conditions Steven Gerrard mentions that Torres can fire Liverpool back into the Top Four on premier league points table.

Last minute Victory against Aston Villa is the back-to-back Premier League victories for Liverpool for the first time since September. Liverpool has moved up on points table and now they are two points behind Aston Villa and within five points of the Champions League qualification places

It also made Torres the quickest player in the Liverpool history to score 50 league goals after reaching the landmark in his 72nd appearance for the club.

Gerrard said delight: “You have to keep going until the end and when you have guys like Fernando in your team you always know there is a chance to snatch it. Everyone knows when he is on form he is the best in the world. We want him to score many more goals like that and drive us into the top four We are hoping this win gives us a big boost. We want to treat the next game like this one. This means nothing on its own.”

Gerrard continued: “Villa, Spurs and Man City are going to keep fighting all the way and we need to do the same. It’s important to build on this and I’m sure we will build on this. We’ve virtually got everybody back fit so there’s no excuses. The top four will be difficult, I’m sure teams will spend in January so it’ll go right to the end.”

Torres, who has now netted 12 goals in 15 Premier League appearances this season. Despite his ongoing rehabilitation from a long-standing groin problem, Torres played the full 90 minutes for the second time in four days.

Torres said: “When you play a good team like Villa it’s always a tough game. But we are closer to the top four now. It was a massive game for us. The form of the team was very good.”

“Last season we scored plenty of goals in injury time and we have done that again tonight. It’s the confidence boost we needed. We need to win games in a row and we are getting close to the form we had last season.”

Liverpool’s win was only their fourth on their Premier League travels this season. However, they are getting their confidence back and will hopefully end up in top four.

Rafa Benitez who is very optimistic about rest of season believes Steven Gerrard’s match winning display against Wolves at Anfield on Saturday will prove to be the perfect boost for Liverpool and help him to get back his confidence.

It was the first time Steven Gerrard scored a goal since game against Hull back in September. Gerrard has struggled with form and injury in recent months but Benitez is backing him to hit a purple patch ahead of tomorrow night’s vital trip to Aston Villa.

Rafael Benitez said: “It was a very important goal for us and for him. To see Gerrard scoring goals and playing well means his confidence will be very high. A goal is a good boost for him and for us. He is someone who has scored 20, 22 or 23 goals a season so he is used to scoring goals. If he can score more he will have more confidence and that will be really good for the team.”

Victory lifted Liverpool up to seventh in the Premier League and with Villa losing at Arsenal yesterday the Reds are only five points off the Champions League qualification places.

Benitez added: “We had to win today and we did. We kept a clean sheet, scored two goals and created chances. There were a lot of positives from a difficult game. We have to go forward now. The main thing was to get three points and now we have to be ready. The fans can enjoy a few days and we can see if we can beat Aston Villa. Then we’ll be closer.”

Liverpool captain, 29-year-old, Steven Gerrard is looking forward to join his team in game against Fulham on Saturday. However, Rafael Benitez confirms that Steven Gerrard is not available for game against Arsenal on wednesday.

Liverpool boss Benitez told liverpool TV : “Gerrard will not be available for this game but he is improving, so hopefully he can be ready for Saturday.”

Steven Gerrard who is suffering from groin injury has already missed the game against Manchester United last week believes to be fully fitted for Premier league next round.

Boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed Alberto Aquilani will be in the Liverpool squad for Wednesday’s Carling Cup clash at Arsenal. It will be the Italian midfielder’s first appearance in the first team since his £20m summer move from Roma.

Benitez said: “He cannot start at this moment but he will be there and maybe we can give him some minutes. If it’s possible, we will try to use him.”

The Liverpool’s injury crisis seems to be getting over with further news that defenders Andrea Dossena and Sotirios Kyrgiakos could well play some part at the Emirates.

“Dossena has been training and will be in the squad. It was one or two small things with him. Kyrgiakos has been training too. We had bad news when everyone was talking about him being out for six months after the internationals. He’s training and he’s available.”

Liverpool FC bounced back in style yesterday when they beat Manchester United by 2-0 at home game. This was a shocker by Alex Ferguson’s men against their arch-rivals as they lost to Liverpool for the third successive time.

Man United manager Mr.Ferguson admitted Liverpool had been a wounded animal and were the rightful winners.

This Liverpool display was light years ahead of the miserable defeat against Lyon in the Champions League. After four defeats in a row the storm clouds had been gathering over Anfield.

Torres, who was playing after missing last two games, was trouble from the start and drew a foul from Patrice Evra which brought about the first good chance of the game with 15 minutes gone.

For all the home side were on top, Yossi Benayoun who had another good game did frustrate at times by choosing to pass when he should have had a go. Twice he refused openings by opting to look for a team-mate and the opportunities were lost. But he is one of Liverpool’s most creative players and rose to the occasion in Gerrard’s absence.

His pass to Torres for his team’s first goal on 65 minutes was an absolute gem as he split Evra and Nemanja Vidic. Torres was on to it, shrugged off Rio Ferdinand’s rather tame challenge and crashed his shot into the roof of the net.

Five minutes of added time were signalled, which proved enough for Liverpool to get another goal. The move started with Carragher winning the ball on the edge of his own area. Kuyt took the ball forward and fed substitute David Ngog, who coolly tucked his shot into the corner.

For Livepool this is going to be a season of many twists and turns in the title race.

Sources from Liverpool confirmed that Steven Gerrard and Fernando are not practicing with team in todays training session. Gerrard with a groin strain and Fernando Torres suffering with a minor adductor problem.

Both players are to be further assessed by the Reds’ medical team.

A club official wrote on Liverpool official site: “Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will not train with the rest of the squad today, but will continue to receive treatment and will be assessed again tomorrow.”

Though its a worrying situation for Rafa Benitez and Liverpool however Benitez believes that this will be a challenge for Liverpool to play against Sunderland today without their two leading players.

He said: “Today’s game against Sunderland starts a demanding run for Liverpool. The first game is crucial. We had the experience two years ago in the Champions League where we had one point after three games. In the end we qualified. In football you never know. The main thing is having confidence in your team and to keep winning. Then it will be easier to talk about the week.”

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez may face a touchline ban and a fine after his outburst following the opning-day setback at Tottenham by the Football Association. He has been charged with improper conduct for comments about referee after 2-1 defeat.

Benitez was furious at Dowd’s refusal to award a late penalty with Liverpool having another spot-kick shout turned down moments later when Fernando Torres struck a shot against Assou-Ekotto’s hand.

Benitez claimed it was “impossible” for his side to be given two penalties by Dowd and pulled a pair of spectacles from the inside pocket of his jacket in what is being viewed as a slight against Dowd’s character.

The FA asked Benitez to explain his comments, but did not quiz him on claims that Attwell, 26, is too young to officiate at Premier League level.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez admits the Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard not have a great start but denied it is a consequence of his court case and believes any dip in form by Gerrard is exaggerated in comparison to his usual world-class standards.

Nevertheless, Benítez accepts the midfielder will be integral to Liverpool’s recovery and is considering moving Gerrard back into central midfield at the Bolton Wanderers.

He Said: “We have seen Steven playing really well for a while now. He is one of our big names, a key player, and he will continue to be that. He will know that he has played a couple of games that are not up to his best level but, because he so often plays really well, people can see the difference. I know he will be ready now. The players are not stupid, they know when they are not playing well and not up to their best standard. He knows, everybody knows here, that we have to improve.”

Regarding him criticising senior players, Benitez said: “I was not naming any particular player when I was critical after the defeat by Villa but it is clear that everyone has to improve. We have analysed things and we have talked to all the players. The reaction from them has been very good.”

Despite loosing two games out of three games, Benitez is still positive for Title, Benitez explained: “Clearly we have more competition this year at the top of the table. Any top side can lose games. I don’t think it will be like before when a team wins the title as they have just won 10 or 12 games in a row.”

“Clearly everybody was expecting three wins in a row and then we’ll have won the league by September. It’s not the case. It’s impossible. You have to be positive. After two defeats we are really disappointed but we still have lots of games to play”.

“We have to improve, play better, make less mistakes and start doing this against Bolton. We can’t change what happened. We conceded an own-goal, a penalty and from a corner. Everything was against us on Monday. But that’s part of the game.”

Steven Gerrard looked shattered after Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Monday. Not just mentally, but physically.

The brilliant Fernando Torres has helped Steven Gerrard out in the last couple of years. And Jamie Carragher is a man who can be relied upon. But generally it all comes down to Gerrard. If he doesn’t play well Liverpool find themselves up against it.

Liverpool’s opening weekend loss at Tottenham and that shocking result at home to Villa were perfect illustrations.

Gerrard has had a tough summer being involved in a court case, charged with affray. Even though he was found not guilty, the stress on him throughout that period was enormous. Desperate to get back playing football and hopeful of bringing the league title to Anfield for the first time since 1990. But he is having alot of difficulties especially Xabi Alonso moved away to Real Madrid.

Unlike other reporters Steven Beacom don’t believe Benitez should be sacked after losing two out of the first three games, but he really should become a lot more flexible. In his article he said: “Telling the senior players, which obviously included Gerrard, to take more responsibility is all very well, but Benitez ought to look at himself too.”

He continued: “If Anfield funds are as limited for the manager as has been suggested, Lucas and Babel should be offloaded to bring in some cash for new signings. Throw in Andriy Voronin as well. Liverpool need a new high class striker to work with Torres so that Gerrard can move back into central midfield and dominate like only he can”.

“And you would have to think that Torres would follow him and where would that leave Steven Gerrard? Carrying the team on his own all over again. Already he does just about everything, from taking corners, free-kicks and penalties. He probably puts out the bins at Anfield too. If and when Rafa goes, he might as well become player-manager and be done with it”.
