Steven Gerrard has called for Uefa to make sure the club do not have to play on the anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy.

The upcoming Champions League quarter-finals are scheduled to be played on April 14 and April 15 – the latter emotive date being the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

Liverpool captain has strongly implored UEFA to repect the memory of the souls lost in the tragedy by making sure his club’s fixture does not fall on the 15th of the month, an emotional day of the year for many Liverpool fans.

The tragedy occured in 1989 during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Gerrard, whose cousin was one of the 96 supporters who died on the day of the disaster, said:

“Hillsborough is always on my mind because I lost a member of my family there and any success we get as a club this year will be dedicated to those people who lost their lives”.

“We hope that UEFA show some common sense. You would think they would accept the significance of the date for the people of Liverpool, but unfortunately feelings like that don’t always come into it”.

“We’re still waiting to see whether UEFA will make us play on the day. That would be far from ideal given all the emotion that always surrounds the club on that day. It should be a time that Liverpool Football Club remembers the people who were lost, and their families.”
