Due to Rio Ferdinand back injury Steven Gerrard will captain England team against Egypt next week in a friendly game.
England manager Fabio Capello turn to Gerrard to lead out the team after stripping Terry of the captaincy. Ferdinand had been due to replace Terry but will miss the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa on Sunday and Sir Alex Ferguson immediately ruled him out of joining up with the England squad for Wednesday’s game.
Alex Ferguson said: “He got a twinge in his back this morning in training. He’d been training great with no mishaps at all. But when you get these twinges you can’t take a chance. He won’t be ready for Sunday. He’ll miss a couple of games.”
On other hand Steven Gerrard feels there is no difference between performing as a captain or as part of the starting XI.
Speaking to FIFA.com, Steven Gerrard said: “When I play for England, when I’m not captain, I still approach it exactly the same as if I am captain and I try and go out there and lead by example, so I can help my team-mates and do the right thing. So, although it is nice to be captain and it’s a privilege, you approach the game exactly the same with an armband on or off.”
