Steven Gerrard uefa footballer of the year award

29-year-old, Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard has been named on an elite list of players in the running for Uefa’s Club Footballer of the Year award.

The Reds skipper will battle it out with the strong contestants likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta for the prestigious award, which will be presented to the winner during the Champions League group stage draw on August 27.

The players were nominated by the coaches of the 16 teams that reached last season’s Champions League knockout phase, with votes cast for a winner in each position as well as the overall Uefa Club Footballer of the Year.

The following season he scored 23 goals in 53 games and was crowned PFA Player of the Year, the first Liverpool man to win the award since John Barnes in 1988.

His stunning 35-yard volley in the 2006 FA Cup final was voted Match of the Day’s Goal of the Season – and completed his set of scoring in the four major Cup finals English footballers can qualify for, something no English-based player had ever done. In December 2006 he was awarded an MBE, while last season he was voted Football Writers’ Player of the Year for the first time.

In their nomination, Uefa said: “Liverpool’s captain may not have ended the season with silverware but it was not through want of trying as the Merseysiders pushed Manchester United FC harder than for many years. Gerrard shone in a second-striker role behind Fernando Torres, hitting 24 goals seven of them in the Uefa Champions League plus a career-best 16 in the Premier League.

“The highlight of his campaign was the week in March when he struck twice in a 4-0 rout of Real Madrid CF then found the net again as Liverpool crushed United 4-1 at Old Trafford.”

Other Contestants for the Awards are:

Steven Gerrard – Liverpool
Terry – Chelsea
Van der Sar – Man Utd
Vidic – Man Utd
Christiano Ronaldo -Man Utd
Valdes – Barcelona
Pique – Barcelona
Hernandez – Barcelona
Iniesta – Barcelona
