Fernando Torres wondergoal inspired Liverpool to another comeback after 3-1 defeat from Chelsea last week. Liverpool beat Blackburn 4-0 in a very important game, saturday, for Liverpool to stay in competition.
Rafa Benitez’s Reds are flooded with confidence to score three goals at Stamford Bridge tomorrow to save their Champions League skins after last week’s 3-1 first-leg mauling.
Torres said: “We have kept our confidence after the Champions League game and it was important to win for the fans. Of course we know it is going to be very difficult to get three against Chelsea because they’re such a strong team. But we beat Manchester United at Old Trafford so we know we can do it. They scored but we still won 4-1. We have confidence that we can go there and win the game”.
“I don’t think Chelsea will defend, I’m sure they will want to play for a win. They know if they score one or two it is over — they will want to score themselves and that will give us a chance.”
Torres’ goal is being compared to Dutch star Marco van Basten’s volley against USSR in the 1988 European Championship final.
But Liverpool Striker Torres, 25, insisted: “People may compare it with Van Basten but I do not think so. He was one of the best players in football history and I have a bit to go before I am as good as him.”
Liverpool Boss Rafa Benitez added: “Fernando’s first goal was very special but I am the kind of manager who always likes to push his players so I know he can do better. I suppose it was similar to Van Basten’s famous goal but if Fernando wants to be at the level of Van Basten then he knows he has to improve.”
Liverpool defender and standing Captain Jamie Carragher said, “With him and Gerrard on the pitch you know the team is much, much better.”
Defender Carragher added: “Fernando is one of the greatest strikers in the world, he scored two fantastic goals against Blackburn and it has been really good to have him back in the side and fit. It is frustrating thinking what we could have done this season if he had been fit all the time.”
Once again Steven Gerrard will be sitting on bench for the tomorrow game due to his groin injury.
