England can be the World Champion Next Summer with help of new found perfect partnership between Liverpool Captain Steven Gerrard and hot-headed Wayne Rooney. Some would argue that Fabio Capello should be playing Steven Gerrard in that position up front but there is no doubt, if England are to do well in the World Cup, they need Rooney and Gerrard firing together.
Steven Gerrard have played in an unfamiliar left midfield role against Slovakia. When the Liverpool skipper does fancy a surge forward, Rooney will drift to the left area vacated by his partner. And vice versa. A perfect illustration of their devastating partnership came in Emile Heskey’s eighth-minute strike against Slovakia.
After the loss of Michael Owen in his prime, there is suddenly a dearth of high-class England strikers and for Capello, this is where Rooney and Gerrard come in. These two players are paid a fortune by their clubs, but you know that whether for Manchester United or Liverpool, or for England, they will fight for the shirt.
The way that Gerrard has played this season and even before, people are starting to conclude beyond any doubt that the free role through the centre is his best position.
“Well, that has been the case from day one. Gerrard’s problem is that he can play right-back, holding midfielder, virtually anywhere on the pitch. For England he has really not been used in his proper position many times. The best place for him would be where Rooney is playing now. But as a manager you have to accommodate”. Telegraph reported.
Quoted from Telegraph Report, “Rooney was overlapping on the flank, while Gerrard had drifted inward. They just switched roles with telepathic understanding. It was a move which encapsulated Capello’s flexible vision. The fluidity about England’s system these days ensures that Gerrard and Rooney no longer feel stifled by a seemingly unfamiliar position”.
“Steve and me changed positions a lot and it seemed to work,’ said Rooney. ‘I am getting on the ball and getting into space. We played quite well together. That is one thing the manager wanted from us, to put the work we have done in training onto the pitch. I think we did that.”
Perhaps Capello has seen how Gerrard has flourished at Liverpool since the arrival of Fernando Torres.
While Rooney is no whippet like Torres, he complements Gerrard in a different way. The close friendship between the pair certainly helps as well.
