It seems that Michael Owen’s glorious eight years at anfield will never come back as Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez revealed yesterday that he considered signing Michael Owen this summer before the England striker completed his shock move to liverpool rivals and last year premier league winners Manchester United.

Benitez admitted while speaking to reporters that he flirted with the idea of bringing the forward back to Liverpool but did not feel he would dislodge Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard up front.

“We had contact with different people and were analysing the situation. But if you want to play Torres and Gerrard there is not always a lot of space for other players. When I brought back Robbie Fowler it was a different situation. We were looking for someone who could understand his role clearly and he was a good finisher”.

Benitez continues, “But we have a World Cup coming up and all the top players want to play. In his position it would be hard for Owen to play every week at Liverpool.”

The 29-year-old striker played for Liverpool during eight glorious seasons (1996-2004) at Anfield of his career scored 158 goals in all competitions. Owen was part of the Liverpool side that won the FA Cup, League Cup and the UEFA Cup in 2001 and was awarded the prestigious Ballon d’Or in the same year.

Owen moved to Real Madrid for £8 million in mid-2004 but was frequently used as a substitute. In spite of this, he scored 13 goals in La Liga and had the season’s highest ratio of goals scored to number of minutes played. He returned to England the following season, joining Newcastle United (2005-2009) for £16 million.

On 3 July 2009, it was announced that Owen had signed a two-year deal with Premier League champions, Manchester United. Owen had also been linked with Hull City, Stoke City, Everton, and Aston Villa, before signing for United, and he said that the approach from manager Alex Ferguson came from “out of the blue”.
