Steven Gerrard assault charge dropped today but still faces a charge of affray following a bar room brawl. The Sun Report.
An assault charge against Steven Gerrard was dropped when the Liverpool captain appeared in court in connection with a bar brawl that left a Businessman Marcus McGee, 34, lost a tooth and suffered a cut face in the fight in Southport, Merseyside.
Liverpool ace Gerrard, 28, who appeared at North Sefton Magistrates’ Court, Southport, had been in the bar in the early hours of December 29 celebrating his team’s 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle United. .
Nick Evans, prosecuting, told the court that after a “review of the evidence in full” it was decided all seven defendants should only face affray charges.
Appearing alongside Gerrard today were Accrington Stanley players goalie Ian Dunbavin, 28, of Southport, and midfielder Robert Grant, 18, of Litherland. Also in the dock were John McGrattan, 33, and Paul McGrattan, 31, both of Huyton.
Chairman of the bench Dr Pamela James committed the case to Liverpool Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on April 3. No formal pleas have yet been made.
Gerrard arrived at court after the other six defendants wearing a charcoal grey suit and a dark blue tie he shook hands with his co-accused and stood chatting with them for 15 minutes before the case began.
Gerrard has been a regular for club and country since 2000. He has scored 14 goals in 70 international matches and dominated Liverpool’s recent successes, including the 2005 Champions League win over AC Milan and the following season’s FA Cup final victory over West Ham.
Although he is a tough tackler, Gerrard is rarely violent on the field and has just five yellow cards this season.
